When a couple gets married in the temple, they attach themselves to the eternal family of their spouses. It is very important to have a good relationship with your in-laws so that when you are with them for eternity you can be happy about it. For a lot of people that can be difficult due to circumstances with their own parents. They could have such a great relationship with their own parents that they don’t see the need for an additional pair or on the other side they could have such a bad relationship that they end up treating their in-laws as their own parents and never talking to them. It can also be hard if your spouse doesn’t have a good relationship with their parents because then you might not have a chance to get to know them very well. I think that it is important to spend time with your in-laws before marriage to make sure that you can get along. They end up being a large part of your marriage and eternal life.
I got lucky with my own in-laws. My wife has a great relationship with her parents so while we were dating, I ended up spending quite a bit of time with them including a few trips. They live closer to us then my own parents so we have birthday dinners with them and most smaller holidays are spent at their home. Because of my wife’s relationship with them I found it easy to get to know them better and they have had the opportunity to get to know me. This has helped our relationship from the beginning. I couldn’t imagine how our marriage would be without the support from both of our parents. We use both of them for advice and help when we have questions. It is also nice to be able to travel somewhere for holidays and have family to spend them with. I am very grateful that our families meshed so well together. I know many people that struggle to spend time with their extended families and knowing that I will spend eternity with them made it important for me when I was dating.
